How to Store Tattoo Ink Properly (Extend Shelf Life)

Good storage is the cheapest insurance you have. A few habits can add months of usable life to every bottle of tattoo or PMU ink and keep your clients safe.

Store Ink Cool, Dark, and Upright

Keep bottles upright below 25C (77F), away from windows and direct light. A dedicated drawer or cabinet beats a sunny counter. Upright storage prevents leaks and keeps the cap seal intact.

Keep Caps Tight and Bottles Sealed

Air is the enemy. Tighten caps after every use and never leave a bottle open between clients. For bottles you rarely use, consider a small strip of parafilm around the cap for an extra seal.

Avoid Cross-Contamination

Never double-dip a used needle or tip into a shared ink bottle. Dispense what you need into a disposable ink cap, then discard it. This protects the whole bottle from bacteria and extends its safe life.

Rotate and Label Stock

Use a first-in, first-out system. Write the fill or open date on every bottle so older stock gets used first. A simple label saves you from guessing which bottle to trust.
